Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question before reaching out? You may find your answer here.

A: We make sure your proposal is in great shape before sending it to our contacts in traditional publishing houses. When a publisher expresses interest or makes an offer, we discuss what we appreciate about the opportunity and what we recommend. If both author and publisher want to move forward, we negotiate the offer and contract and advocate for you post-contract in matters concerning your book, marketing, and involvement with the publisher.

A: An agent can open doors with publishers that you’re not able to open on your own, including access to houses that require agented submissions. We have the experience of working with a wide variety of publishers and editors, and we keep up with what they’re looking for. When it comes to pitching your project, we know who is the best fit and what the competitive landscape looks like. When it comes to contracts, we know reasonable advances and royalties, what publishers can bring to the table, and how to position you for the best possible outcome.

A: The industry standard is 15% of your advance and royalties, paid directly to the agent by the publisher. This covers working with you on your book proposal, editing your sample writing, and submitting your project to multiple publishers simultaneously.

A: We are more likely to give serious consideration to your project if we have had an appointment with you — at a writer’s conference or through one of our pitch appointments. We also value recommendations from our clients and publishing contacts. You are always welcome to submit directly through our Submissions page as well.

A: BDA has a template for both fiction and non-fiction writers that we make available if we meet with you at a conference or through a pitch appointment with you.

A: Yes. If you submitted through our submissions line, you can send a follow-up on the same email thread after about eight weeks. The same applies if you were invited to submit directly to an agent.

A: Depending on the book and how it was received in the marketplace, we may be able to. It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen. Most often we would look at your next book if you have previously self-published.

A: We don’t publish books ourselves. We pitch books to traditional publishers, including hybrid publishers, and we can recommend self-publishing companies we have worked with.
